Fourth unit of Kaiga ready

Correspondent

Karwar: The fourth unit of the Kaiga nuclear power station is ready to produce electricity and the criticality function will be held on Saturday. Dr. Shrikumar Byanarji, secretary of the Atomic Energy Commission and Dr. S.K. Jain, president of Nuclear Power Corporation Ltd. will participate in the programme. The criticality of the reactor means it is poised for power production on a continuous basis.

Sources from Nuclear Power Corporation Ltd. said Asian and American experts had inspected the unit and all had certified its safety.

The radiation from the plant is negligible even after 15 years of commissioning the first plant. There is no major change in the air, water and environment composition in the areas around Kaiga plant, sources said.
