Josco, Central Excise in final

KOCHI: Josco FC shocked State Bank of Travancore 2-1 and marched into the final of the fourth Navy Week State-level football tournament at the Fort Kochi Parade Ground on Friday night.

All the goals came in the first session. Lijo Stephen gave the Kochi-based Josco the lead in the 15th minute while the seasoned Asif Saheer scored the SBT equaliser ten minutes later.

Josco's foreign recruit Mamadou scored the team's match-winner in the 35th.

There will be no match on Saturday and on Sunday, Josco will meet another Kochi side, Central Excise, in the final.

Central Excise defeated Malabar United by a lone goal late on Thursday night in the first semifinal. Jibin Joseph scored the match-winner in the 21st minute.

New chairman

Handball in Kerala has been experimenting with new things to boost the sport in a big way. The Ernakulam-based Anjali Sports Academy brought in a Ukrainian coach early this year to pick and train young girls and mould them into Asian and world champions.

On Thursday, the Kerala Handball Association created a new post and brought in Mohan Raj, a US-based NRI businessman who has his roots in Kozhikode, as its new chairman.

The KHA also has a prominent NRI businessman Raji Menon as its patron.

“I'm into sports administration for the first time with this role,” said Mr. Mohan Raj at a media meet at the Travancore Court here. “But my dad was into athletics administration in Kerala and had conducted a national athletics meet many years ago.”

The KHA is confident that Mr. Mohan Raj would bring in fresh ideas to raise the profile of the sport. “Mohan will be back from the US in February; we will hold discussions then about how we could work together,” said KHA President B. Rajan.

“We plan to hold a series of tournaments after that.”
