880 grams of gold jewellery seized

CHENNAI: Customs officials at the Chennai airport seized 880 grams of gold jewellery, which was smuggled into the country. The seized jewellery was valued at Rs.16.90 lakh.

On Tuesday two Sri Lankan nationals were intercepted and a search resulted in the recovery of gold chains and rings in crude form.

The seized jewellery weighed 330 grams and was valued at Rs.6.64 lakh.

Gold bars

In another seizure on Monday the authorities intercepted a Sri Lankan national and recovered two gold bars and a gold bangle totally weighing 255 grams.

The passenger admitted that he carried gold to be handed over to someone in Chennai for monetary consideration. They were valued at Rs.4.74 lakh.

Another passenger from Singapore, who was not eligible to clear the gold under concessional rate of duty, was intercepted on Tuesday.

Examination of him resulted in the recovery of 295 grams of gold jewellery. As the passenger had not stayed abroad for more than six months, he was not eligible to clear the gold under concessional rate of duty.

The authorities collected duty at baggage rate amounting Rs.2 lakh for the value of the 295 grams of gold jewellery he was carrying.
