Srikakulam wins maiden title

VISAKHAPATNAM: Srikakulam won its first title in an inter-district tournament of the North Zone of ACA when it pipped Visakhapatnam on run-quotient to claim the P.N. Rajagopal trophy in the under-14 tournament that concluded at Vizianagaram on Friday.

Off-spinner R. Suraj Preetam made the occasion more memorable for himself and his team with a perfect 10 in Visakhapatnam's second innings conceding 52 runs off 44 overs.

Visakhapatnam gained the first innings lead and finished with 13 points. Srikakulam too logged the same number of points but with a slightly better run quotient, 1.5 to 1.2 of Visakhapatnam.

In the other match, East Godavari off-spinner Ch. V.S. Anil claimed five wickets in Vizianagaram's first innings, and with P. Anil (four for 20) forced the follow-on. But the host played well in its second essay to score 199 for four to force a draw.

Former President of ACA P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju presented the trophy to Srikakulam.

The scores: Visakhapatnam 176 and 181 in 114.5 overs (Anwar Raja 46 n.o., Prasanth 44, R. Suraj Preetam 10 for 52) drew with Srikakulam 156 in 75.2 overs (Manoj Kumar 32, Vinay Kumar 25, G. Manish seven for 46).

East Godavari 294 and 113 in 59 overs (Vijay Kumar 28, Ch. V.S. Anil five for 19, P. Anil four for 20) and 199 for four in 46.5 overs (A. Vijay Kumar 61, R. Ravikumar 59, Rambhadra 50 n.o.). — Special Correspondent
