VELLORE: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday issued orders renaming Officers' Line (named so during the British regime) in Vellore as Anna Salai, and Long Bazaar, also in Vellore, as Thirumuruga Kripananda Variar Salai, accepting the proposals sent to the government by the Vellore Corporation after passing resolutions for the name change at the Corporation Council meeting.

Mr. Karunanidhi issued the orders, inaugurating new buildings of Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore – the administrative block, academic block, library block and computer centre block – constructed at a total cost of Rs.20.35 crore on 112.68 acres in Serkadu, about 20 km from here.

He also issued orders naming the public grievances redressal hall, being constructed at the Collectorate at a cost of Rs.25 lakh under the MPs Local Area Development Scheme of the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, as Quaid-e-Millath Public Grievances Redressal Hall. He said that when a demand could be fulfilled on the spot, he always did so without summoning officials and the files to his chamber.

Responding to the request of Vellore MLA C. Gnanasekaran for making permanent the 84 temporary employees of the university, the Chief Minister said there was a procedure for making temporary employees permanent in a university or in any other organisation or administrative body. The procedure was to conduct an examination for such employees and regularise those employees who passed the examination.

“I assure you that, similarly, an examination would be conducted soon for the 84 temporary employees of Thiruvalluvar University, and those who pass the examination may be made permanent,” he said. The Chief Minister said the government would also fulfil Mr. Gnanasekaran's request for the construction of students' hostel, which would soon be built on the new university campus.

Mr. Karunanidhi said that the announcement made by the government in the Assembly in pursuance to the resolution passed at the World Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore about providing 20 per cent of the government jobs to those who studied in Tamil medium had now come into force. Mr. Karunanidhi appealed to the students to make use of the infrastructure provided in the university, spending crores of rupees. The parents too educated the children with great difficulty. “Students should make use of the educational opportunities and not waste them. If you go on strike, then the education is of no use”, he said, and appealed to them to sincerely adhere to the Thirukkural (the couplet written by Thiruvalluvar), ‘Karka Kasadara Karpavai, Katrapin Nirka Adharku Thaga' (read without a flaw, and lead your life in accordance with what you learnt).

K. Ponmudi, Minister for Higher Education said the DMK government was responsible for the establishment of Anna University in Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Madurai, Teacher Education University, Chennai, Central University, Tiruvarur, and the Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchi – in Tamil Nadu in the last four-and-a-half years. Besides, it had started government engineering colleges in 11 places, government colleges of arts and science in 16 places and government medical colleges in six places – during the period.

Durai Murugan, Law Minister presided. M. Abdul Rahman, Vellore MP, requested the Chief Minister to establish a Classical Tamil Research Centre in Thiruvalluvar University.
