Community college scheme to be launched

Staff Reporter

In 14 affiliated colleges of Bharathidasan University

TIRUCHI: The community college scheme of Bharathidasan University will be launched in 14 affiliated colleges in the first week of December.

Six-month courses in Desk Top Publishing; Windows & MS Office; Tailoring, Embroidery & Printing; and Electrician will be offered free of cost for school drop outs and unemployed youth, including illiterates, through the colleges either on week days or during weekends for 180 hours. Successful candidates will be jointly certified by the Department of Technical Education (DOTE) and the university, the Vice-Chancellor K. Meena said.

At a brain-storming session conducted by the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) with coordinators of the identified colleges earlier this week, courses were identified and aspects like infrastructure, course content, admissions, examination, valuation and certification discussed. Chairing the session, Dr. Meena highlighted the need for imparting skill-based training to rural dropouts, especially girls.

The objective, she said, was to transform the beneficiaries of the training programme into entrepreneurs with the technical support of IECD.

The IECD, she said, would coordinate and monitor the courses and network with Department of Technical Education (DOTE), the university and the community colleges.

K. Parthasarathy, IECD Director, briefed the coordinators about the deliberations at the State-level meeting of university coordinators convened by the DOTE.

Dr. Meena said that the programme would be launched at the Idhaya College for Women, Kumbakonam, on December 1; at JJ College, Pudukkottai, on December 4 and other colleges on December 6 and 7.
