CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday refuted Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's allegations that marriage assistance to poor women was stopped during the AIADMK regime. In a statement here she said that the AIADMK government extended financial assistance to thousands of people under four schemes, including E.V.R. Maniammaiyar ninaivu poor widow's daughters' marriage assistance scheme, Dr. Dharmambal Memorial Widow Remarriage Assistance Scheme and Mother Teresa Memorial Destitute Women's Marriage Assistance Scheme. She said the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar marriage scheme was given up because of irregularities found during the DMK rule. “But, none was affected by this cancellation. In fact the AIADMK government went beyond the target of these schemes. This clearly proves Mr. Stalin's remarks are mischievous in nature.” Noting that it was former Chief Minister MGR who introduced marriage assistance scheme in 1982, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she conducted 1008 marriages in 2002 and 1,053 marriage in 2003 at Tiruverkadu. Earlier, between 1991 and 1996, 2,500 free marriages were conducted at Chidambaram and 5004 free marriages in Tiruchi. “I have also presided over a lot of free marriages as a Leader of Opposition,” she said accusing Mr. Stalin of raising the issue to divert people's attention from the 2G spectrum scam.
