under water: Though rainwater has receded from several parts of Puducherry, water is still stagnant in certain areas.

PUDUCHERRY: The government has asked the Revenue and Agriculture Departments to submit reports to assess the damage caused by the recent rain, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam has said.

Damage to property and farmlands could be assessed only after the departments concerned submit reports, he told The Hindu.

Compensation after getting reports

The government would announce compensation only after getting the reports, he added.

As there was not much rain on Sunday, rainwater started receding, Collector G. Ragesh Chandra said.

Water started receding from several low-level areas in the rural and urban pockets.

Yet to recede

In certain residential areas such as Krishna Nagar, Rainbow Nagar, Pavanan Nagar and in some parts of Boomianpet and Abhisekapakkam, the water flow was yet to recede, an official in the Revenue Department said.

Reports received so far revealed that more than 60 huts had suffered damage, and some of them had fully been damaged, he said. Though the government had opened temporary shelters on Saturday following the heavy rain, people living in places that faced inundation refused to move to such camps, he added.

On Sunday evening, Union Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture V. Narayanasamy, along with officials from the district administration, visited the rain-affected areas.
