District Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu garlanding the portrait of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule at a meeting held in Guntur on Sunday. GUNTUR: District Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu on Sunday paid rich tributes to iconic and radical 19th century social reformer Jyotirao Phule at a meet held at the S.C Corporation Conference Hall. The Collector who reminded the gathering the historic struggle waged by Phule against caste oppression and untouchablity in Maharashtra, assured that he would strive to introduce lessons on Phule in the school text books. He also promised that a bronze statue of Phule would be erected at the NTR Bus Station Complex and asked the BC associations to form a committee. He explained about the caste, conflict and ideology of Phule, who fought against the oppressive and brutal structure of caste system in the 19th century and the way Phule worked his way towards challenging the hegemony of Brahmincal oppression. He also reminded the inspiring role of his wife Savithri who strove to educate herself received good applause. Noted advocate Y. Koteswara Rao said Phule desired nothing less than a complete smashing up of its oppressive structure. “While Phule was the forerunner of social movements, his endearing effort to encourage female literacy was no less commendable', Mr. Koteswara Rao said. Social Welfare Department Joint Director P.C.P Raju and other officers were present.
