This is a protest for neglecting border areas: sene Four arrested, four police personnel suspended
Caught in the act:Karnataka Nava Nirmana Sene members targeting Karnataka Border Area Development Authority chairman Chandrakant Bellad in Bidar on Sunday. Bidar: A few members of the Karnataka Nava Nirmana Sene daubed oil on the face of Karnataka Border Area Development Authority chairman Chandrakant Bellad here on Sunday. They said they were protesting against the “neglect” of border areas by the Government. When Mr. Bellad arrived here from Gulbarga in the morning, around 10 members of the sene sought to meet him at Habsikot government guesthouse. A delegation led by Chandrakath Kattimani handed over a memorandum to Mr. Bellad demanding a special package for Bidar's development and “focused” development of villages along the State's border. However, they got into an argument with Mr. Bellad when he tried to reason with them that the State Government was taking concrete steps for the development of border districts. At one point, the sene members daubed engine oil on Mr. Bellad's face, the police said. Authority member Jagannath Hebbale and others were present during the incident. Mr. Bellad later condemned this act and said he came out to meet the sene members as they had told him that they wanted to submit a memorandum. “They lied to me,” he said. The police later arrested four of the accused — Vithal Gaekwad, Harish Gaekwad, Prakash Kapalapurkar and Sunil Kumar. They are on the lookout for the six others who were part of the delegation. Four police personnel — sub-inspector Ali Sab, escort officer Shant Kumar, assistant sub-inspector S. Nagashetty and constable Rajesh Chaluva — have been suspended, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police S.Y. Ravi Kumar. Protest General secretary of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party Babu Wali and other party workers staged a protest in front of the Market police station here, demanding that all those involved in the incident be arrested. They also demanded that the Government ban the sene.
