Bangalore: In less than 11 hours between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, three chain snatching incidents were reported in different parts of the city, causing concern among the city police officials. The culprits stealthily approached the unsuspecting women in three incidents and escaped after snatching their gold chains together valued at Rs. 3.04 lakh. The first incident was reported on Promenade Road in Fraser Town around 7 p.m. on Saturday. Two men on a motorcycle snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 64,000 from S. Mallika Shekar of Maruti Seva Nagar. According to the victim, she was returning from a choultry after attending a wedding. The accused attacked her near Officers' Mess and snatched the chain. The complaint was registered at 8.30 p.m. The second incident was reported in front of Nanjundeshwara Kalyan Mantap off Dodda Gubbi Road at around 7.15 p.m. on Saturday. Two men on a motorcycle attacked Bhagyamma, a resident of Maruti Layout near Hennur, and snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 1.60 lakh from her. According to the Kothanur police, who are investigating the case, the victim was returning from the choultry with her family members after attending a wedding. She was talking to her husband S. Ramesh near her car when the accused attacked her. One person snatched the chain and the other was waiting for him on his motorcycle ready to flee. They both sped away, the police said. The victim filed a case at 8.15 p.m. The third incident was reported in the Chamarajapet police station limits at 5.45 a.m. on Sunday. Two men in an autorickshaw snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 80,000 from Hema Narayana of Chamarajapet 1 {+s} {+t} Main 1 {+s} {+t} Cross. According to Ms. Hema, the incident happened near a milk booth off 2 {+n} {+d} Main 4 {+t} {+h} Cross of Chamarajapet. She was going for a morning walk when the men attacked her. One of them snatched the chain and his associate was waiting for him in his autorickshaw, the victim said in the complaint lodged at 7 a.m. Caution Meanwhile, the city police, which is concerned over the rise in the number of chain snatching incidents, appealed to the people not to exhibit ornaments unnecessarily. During November 2010, at least 22 incidents of chain snatching have taken place in the city. “These incidents should serve as a warning to others. The first two cases were reported near wedding halls. We suspect that culprits are targeting those attending marriages. We have been keeping a watch on strangers near wedding halls. People also should cooperate with us by giving information about strangers,” the police told The Hindu. In all the three cases, the victims were educated persons. But they failed to note down the registration numbers of vehicles. They should attempt to alert the public and also inform the police immediately, the police suggested. “In all the three cases, they complained to the police after some time. Hence, our efforts, including setting up nakabandi and special drives against the accused, have not yielded any results,” the police said.
