Bangalore: Protesting against the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BBMP) road widening project, residents of Banaswadi and Wheeler Road staged a protest near ITC flyover here on Sunday. Holding placards and shouting slogans against road widening, the residents said that the BBMP and the Government should come out with alternative solutions to the problem of traffic congestion. “The BBMP's proposed move to widen 216 roads will affect 37,000 properties. More than 20,000 trees will have to be cut for taking up this project. Can we afford this destruction,” N. Ramesh, president of the Residents Welfare Association of Cooke Town, asked. The protesters have made suggestions to tackle the problem. The bottleneck at Mukunda flyover in Banaswadi, which results in a traffic jam during peak hours, can be eased with better traffic management. One of the protesters pointed out that the BBMP had accorded permission for a mall near Mukunda flyover. “This will further increase traffic congestion,” he said.
