NEW DELHI: The government is understood to have finalised the name of the next chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). The external intelligence agency is most likely to be headed by Sanjeev Tripathi, an officer of the RAW Allied Services (RAS) cadre.
Current chief K.C. Verma, is due to retire on January 31 next, and is expected to be shifted to the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) as its chief. Mr. Tripathi, who retires on December 31, will secure a two-year tenure, once his appointment is formally notified, according to sources in the government.
Mr. Tripathi originally belongs to the Uttar Pradesh cadre of the 1973 batch of the IPS, but was absorbed in the RAW.
Considered a protégé of Ashok Chaturvedi, who served as the RAW chief before Mr. Verma became the head of the agency in the early 2009, Mr. Tripathi now heads the Aviation Research Centre (ARC) of the RAW.
When Mr. Tripathi takes over, he will probably be the first RAW chief from the RAS cadre since it came into existence nearly 43 years ago.
