MYSORE: The State Government will honour toppers in Kannada in SSLC and II PU examinations in 52 border taluks with Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000 each respectively from the academic year 2011-12.

Disclosing this at a function organised to release 40 Kannada works published by the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) under ‘Popular Kannada Series' of the Kannada Language Development Programme, Minister for Kannada and Culture Govind M. Karjol said here on Tuesday that move was aimed at promoting Kannada in border areas.

The KSOU has published the 40 works by spending Rs.1 crore provided by the State Government to promote Kannada.

Calling upon governments in the neighbouring States to end border disputes and work for the development of border areas, he said, “Sixty years have already been wasted fighting over border disputes; now it is time for introspection and development.”

Underlining the need for cultural exchange between the States, he said translation of works in other languages into Kannada and vice-versa would help in building healthy relations between the States.

Noting that, while the previous governments earmarked meagre funds for Department of Kannada and Culture, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had set aside Rs.158 crore in the budget and released an additional Rs.18.50 crore to take up pending works. He lauded the efforts of the KSOU in publishing the 40 works and hoped that the varsity would bring out another 40 book at the earliest. Litterateur D. Javare Gowda, Secretary to the Department of Kannada and Culture B.R. Jayaramaraje Urs and Director, Manu Baligar, spoke on the occasion. Vice-Chancellor KSOU K.S. Rangappa presided over the function.

Vice-Chancellor of Sanskrit University Mallepuram G. Venkatesh spoke on the works released on the occasion.
