Fake currency worth Rs. 13 lakh seized

Accused got fake money from Malda in West Bengal
Their supplier allegedly got it from Bangladesh

Mumbai: The Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has seized more than Rs. 13 lakh of fake currency here, arresting four persons on Monday. ATS chief Rakesh Maria said here in a press conference on Tuesday that the accused would get the fake currency from Malda in West Bengal.

Samed Sheikh (35), Mohammad Rafiq Islam (23), Pratap Chaudhary (24) and Dildar Hussain (25), all hail from Malda and worked in Mumbai. Mr Maria said that one Ghulam Murtaza was their supplier. Murtaza allegedly got the notes from Bangladesh.

Elaborating upon the modus operandi, he said that the accused would get the fake currency to Mumbai and make purchases such as fish or fruits in bulk here, using the counterfeit money. After which, they would sell the material in the open market. “In the past three months, Samed registered a profit of Rs. 11 lakh,” Mr. Maria said.

Rafiq Islam was a labour contractor here who is alleged to have paid his labourers using the fake currency.
