“Niyamgiri You Are Still Alive,” “Kaippad” share award

Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and United Breweries Chairman Vijay Mallya with the award winners of Best Short Films at the International Film Festival of India in Panaji on Tuesday.

PANAJI: Short films on environmental issues ‘Niyamgiri You Are Still Alive,' directed by Suma Josson, and ‘Kaippad,' directed by Babu Kambrath, were declared joint winners of ‘The Vasudha Award,' the country's only government award for an environmental film, on Tuesday.The award instituted by the Short Film Centre (SFC) at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) carried a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh.

‘Extinction-II' directed by Fernando Uson Fornies, Spain won “The Golden Lamp Tree Award” and a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh in the international section of short films.

Vijay Mallya, Chairman of the UB group, was the chief guest at the award ceremony. Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, State Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava, Director-General of Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) S.M. Khan, the jury of short films led by filmmaker Goutam Ghose and environmental short film jury led by Naresh Bedi were present.

“The Silver Lamp Tree Award” with prize money of Rs. 1 lakh went to “Kusum,” a film directed by Shumona Banerjee. “Special Jury Mention Award” with a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh was awarded to “Charulata…A Sequel of the Life Untold,” by Sangeeta Padmanabhan and “Certificate of Appreciation from the Jury” went to “Incurable India” by Umesh Aggarwal.
