Tata re-launches tea brand

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Amid a market where consumption growth has slowed down on account of inflation, Tata Global Beverages Ltd (TGBL) is re-launching its flagship brand, Tata Tea Premium, which accounts for over 40 per cent of the company's turnover.

Company Vice-President, Marketing, Sushant Dash, said here at a press conference that the last two years had been difficult for the tea category with auction prices going up rapidly.

“This, combined with inflation in sugar and milk has actually resulted in a drop in consumption of the beverage per household.”

He said that while prices have been increased by 35 per cent over the last two years (with the last one being in June 2009) there was a pressure on margins. TGBL's portfolio now has seven brands, including some regional ones. Volume-wise, TGBL is the market leader in India while value-wise it has the second position.
