Sluice at lake collapses

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Thanks to heavy rain, all water sources in Villupuram district are almost full, except the lake at Se. Mathur in Vikkiravandi block near here.

The only sluice in the lake, had become weak and started leaking.

As the lake was getting filled, the 12-metre high sluice, unable to withstand the pressure, collapsed, draining the entire water stored into the nearby farmlands. The unexpected inundation had affected farmers of the region.

Having realised its potential for giving a thrust to agriculture in this region, the authorities had strengthened its bund a few months ago.

The lake, spread over 50 acres, has been catering to the irrigation needs of over 350 acres of farmland. This waterbody has also been getting surpluses from other sources such as Puliyendi, Anaiyeri and Mathur Thirukkai lake. In fact, the Se.Mathur lake was full till Monday, with a steady inflow.
