Staff Reporter
More than 30 injured in the accident involving two private buses
THENI: At least, 14 persons were killed and more than 30 persons injured when two private buses collided head-on in Shanmuga Sundarapuram village, near Andipatti on Wednesday evening.
While one bus was proceeding to Madurai from Theni, the other was going to Chinnamanur from Madurai.
In the impact, the bus from Madurai overturned and many were crushed to death. Some bodies got thrown out of the bus. The police said both buses were driven at great speed. The accident took place when one driver attempted to overtake a vehicle and lost control and hit the bus coming in the opposite direction. The front portions of both the buses were completely damaged. Police and the fire service personnel struggled for a long time to rescue the injured, who were caught in the mangled remains. They ripped open the damaged portion and rescued the injured. Several bodies were caught under the buses, said eyewitnesses. Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan supervised the rescue operation.
The injured were shifted to this hospital.
