Bangalore: It's official now. Bangalore University will be bifurcated and not trifurcated. Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya made it clear on Wednesday that the university will be bifurcated — one comprising colleges in Bangalore city and surroundings, and other consisting of colleges in surrounding districts — for better administration. “The university will not be trifurcated based on number of colleges as suggested by a committee earlier. We will work out the mode of bifurcation,” said Dr. Acharya. Trifurcation has been an issue for the past couple of years after a committee headed by its former Vice-Chancellor N. Rudraiah recommended it based on the number of colleges affiliated to the university. Debate This triggered a debate among students and teachers, with some favouring it, others demanding bifurcation and still others advising status quo. Notice to VC soon The State Government will soon issue notice to H. Maheshappa, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University, seeking an explanation on the allegation related to his BE degree marks. Dr. Acharya said that he has directed the Higher Education Department Principal Secretary to look into the allegations. Alleged An RTI activist alleged that Mr. Maheshappa, in his resume to the Governor, had claimed he had a first class though he secured only second class. Mr. Maheshappa has denied the allegation.
