‘Steps on to complete title deed distribution by January'

‘About 1.7 lakh people given title deeds so far'

‘Land should not be denied citing technicalities'


ALAPPUZHA: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has said that steps to complete the distribution of title deeds to Adivasis in the State, as per the provisions of the Forest Rights Act, by January 2011 were in progress.

Inaugurating the District Land Distribution and ‘pattaya' mela here on Thursday, Mr. Rajendran said about 1.7 lakh people had been given title deeds over the last four and a half years. By January, another 30,000 would also be given title deeds.

Calling for better coordination between the Revenue Department and the local self-governing bodies, which decided on the ownership of land to be distributed, the Minister said officials should not deny land to the deserving citing minor technicalities. Humanitarian consideration had to be shown and officials should see rehabilitation of the misplaced and the homeless as their duty, he said.

A many as 410 families were given title deeds on Thursday, taking the total number of families to have received title deeds in the district in the last four and half years to 4,456. Those given title deeds on Thursday included nine families near the Punnamada Finishing Point, whose land had been acquired by the government for the proposed Alappuzha Cargo Terminal. A.A. Shukoor, MLA, presided over the function. P. Thilothaman and K.K. Shaju, MLAs, District Collector P. Venugopal, municipal chairperson Mercy Diana Macido, Additional District Magistrate Antony Dominique and others were present.
