Tirupur: Two hostels have come up at the Tirupur Export Knitwear Industrial Complex (TEKIC), Mudalipalayam, at an outlay of Rs 2.25 crore.

The project, meant for migrant women workers, was jointly executed by New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited (NTADCL); Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company Limited (TWICL), a firm promoted as a joint venture by Government of Tamil Nadu and IL & FS (Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services), and the TEKIC. The building, commissioned on Saturday, have a total capacity to accommodate round 300 persons with canteen facilities.

Estate

“This is the first of its kind for women coming up on an industrial complex/estate premises in Tirupur knitwear cluster,” TEKIC president K. Manthrachalam told The Hindu.

The rent, according to him, is kept very low which would be a relief to the workers who, otherwise, were confronted with exorbitant house rentals in the cluster.

“We will be entrusting Self-Help Groups to run the canteen so that the hostellers could get high quality food at very cheap rates,” he added.

Maintenance and roles

On the role of the implementing agencies in the project, Mr. Manthrachalam said that the capital expenditure was roped in from the Centre with the effort of NTADCL and TWICL, while TEKIC provided the space for the hostel on a 28-year lease.

The annual maintenance and administration of the hostels would be carried out by a special managing committee constituted of representatives from TEKIC, NTADCL and TWICL.
