‘Look beyond honge seeds for biofuel'

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Y.B. Ramakrishna, the Karnataka State Biofuel Task Force Chairman has asked people to make use of the waste generated in the backyard for generation of biofuel.

Inaugurating a workshop on “Biofuel: Research and Business Opportunities” on Thursday, Mr. Ramakrishna said many resources that could generate biofuel were wasted. “At present, we are using only 15 per cent of the resources for generating biofuel,” he said. Generation of biofuel was not just about planting honge trees. “It takes a long time for these plants to grow and its seeds can be used for generating biofuel. You can very well make use of other resources that can generate ethanol.”

Mr. Ramakishna said in the coastal region fish oil was a good source. “As much as 70,000 tonnes of fish oil is exported from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi region to Europe, where it is used for generation of biodiesel. Value addition can be made to the fish oil here, which would generate more income than what is earned by export,” he said.

About 45,000 tonnes of cashew apple, which helps generate ethanol, was being wasted. “About 15,000 tonnes of ethanol can be generated from such a large quantity of cashew apple. Technology available with the NMAM Institute of Technology can be used for this purpose,” said Mr. Ramakrishna. The Task Force was favoured more centres for processing fish oil and cashew apples.
