Call for research to protect marine life

KOCHI: Scientific research on the impact of oceans on climate change and conservation of marine biodiversity need to be taken up, said Shailesh Nayak, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Inaugurating a symposium on Indian Ocean marine living resources, organised by the Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE) of the Ministry, Mr. Nayak said that the exploration of deep sea genetic biological resources was also a priority area of research.

The dissemination of the acquired knowledge on marine sciences and technology was also important in understanding the oceans and marine life.

A. E. Muthunayagam, former Secretary, Department of Ocean Development, E.G. Silas, former Vice-Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University, S. A. H. Abidi, former member, Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board, V. N. Sanjeevan, Director, CMLRE and Ian Poiner, Chair, international scientific steering committee of the Census of Marine Life International Secretariat, were among those who attended.
