Aggrieved:Parents and relatives of Pragathi, who died at the Salem Government Medical College Hospital, staging a demonstration at Salem on Thursday. — SALEM: Tension prevailed in front of the Salem Government Medical College Hospital here on Thursday following the death of a two-year-old girl, who was brought for an operation for cleft lip some 10 days ago at the hospital. Demanding an enquiry into the death of the child Pragathi, her parents Nirmalanandan and Sajajeevini living at the Sri Lankan refugee camp at Nagiampatti in Salem district, said that they had brought the child to the hospital a month back to get rectified her cleft lip handicap. The doctors, they claimed, after examining the child told them to bring her again on November 23 for operation. As told by them they admitted her for the operation on November 23. “In fact the child was thoroughly examined and was taken to the operation theatre at about 9 a.m. At 11.30 a.m., they brought the child out saying that she was weak and hence operation could not be performed on her. At that time she was vomiting blood and after persuasion, the child was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit,” said Mr. Nirmalanandan. Later the child reportedly slipped into coma and died on Thursday morning. This prompted the inmates of the camp and the relatives to stage a road blockade near the Integrated Collectorate Complex. They said that the girl died owing to wrong treatment and hence demanded a thorough enquiry. Medical Superintendant N. Mohan said that an enquiry into the incident had already been ordered.
