More distributors for Indane gas in Madurai region by March

Shastry V.Mallady

MADURAI: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) would appoint more Indane gas distributors in Madurai region, mainly in rural areas, by March. It would facilitate quick and easy supply of domestic LPG cylinders in the southern districts.

Applications for new distributors had been received and being processed. They will be added in two categories — regular and Rajiv Gandhi Gramin LPG Vitrak Scheme.

D. Murali, Senior Area Manager, IOC, Madurai Area Office, told The Hindu on Friday that at least 10 distributors would be added by March.

While the Madurai Area Office of the IOC covers 10 districts from Pudukottai to Kanyakumari, it currently has 95 distributors. For the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen LPG Scheme, the selection of distributors was made through lot in the presence of Collectors.

Small villages were identified for setting up gas agencies so that rural people would get cylinder without much waiting period.

Besides a few places in Madurai district, the new distributors would also be located in Dindigul and Ramanathapuram districts. Particulars of new gas agencies and their locations would be announced soon, he said.

Lorry strike

LPG refill supply would not be affected by the lorry strike announced from December 5. “We are monitoring the supplies. Since it is an essential commodity, the strike may not affect LPG supply,” Mr. Murali said.
