Goa grabs vital first innings lead

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad paid dearly for its over-cautious approach and conceded the vital first innings lead to Goa on the fourth day of the Ranji Trophy (Plate) Group A match which ended in a tame draw here on Saturday.

Resuming at its overnight score of 351 for five, a spirited performance was expected from the well-set Ahmed Quadri and Ibrahim Khaleel this morning. But, that was not to be. And after Quadri (76) was trapped lbw on the shuffle by medium-pacer Saurabh Bandekar in the eighth over, the proceedings became painstakingly slow.

In the 34 overs before the lunch break, Hyderabad scored only 34 runs and lost three important wickets. Inexplicably, even after Quadri's dismissal, the normally efficient Ibrahim Khaleel never opened up and ironically was dismissed while playing back to be bowled by off-spinner Amit Yadav in the penultimate over before lunch. He scored only seven runs this morning.

When Hyderabad was bowled out for 394 in the fifth over after lunch, the rest of the play was inconsequential. At the end of fourth round, Hyderabad has 10 points from four games and Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh 15 each and Goa 11 points. All the teams have one more game on hand.

Effectively, if Hyderabad has to stay in contention now, the only way out is to score an outright win against Madhya Pradesh at home from December 8 and also hope the Goa-Tripura match is abandoned due to rain.
