Raichur District Civil Hospital hit by neglect

Staff Correspondent

Encroachment, lack of funds impede development works

Encroachment has reduced the hospital area to 22 acres from the original 30 acres

The decades-old building's first floor collapsed due to rain a few years ago

Raichur: A project to improve facilities at the District Civil Hospital here has come to a halt due to lack of funds.

The project proposed the construction of a new hospital building, a dormitory, a parking and a public garden on the hospital premises.

The Government's failure to release adequate funds and Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences' (RIMS) inability to clear encroachment on the hospital premises are the main reasons the proposed project could not take off.

According to Government records, the District Civil Hospital, now attached to the RIMS administration and referred to as a teaching hospital, had about 30 acres to itself. In the last few decades, however, some influential people started constructed buildings and huts, encroaching upon the hospital property. The original area of the hospital has now been reduced to 22 acres.

No action

Confirming the encroachment around the hospital four months ago, T.M. Nataraj, Superintendent of the District Civil Hospital, had submitted a report to the district administration seeking assistance in clearing them. But so far, the Deputy Commissioner has not initiated any measures.

Old building

The building of the District Civil Hospital, which is more than four decades old, has become weak and needs renovation. A few years ago, the first floor had collapsed due to heavy rain.

After establishing RIMS here, the Government had proposed to construct a modern hospital building by dismantling the old structure of the hospital.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, during his visited in August, had directed the authorities to do the same and had promised to release funds for the purpose.

According to Ramaiah, RIMS Principal and Director, the ongoing construction work on the first two blocks of a super-speciality hospital at RIMS was expected to be completed before February 2011. It has been proposed to shift the District Civil Hospital to the new hospital building on RIMS premises. But the encroachment needed to be cleared first, he said.
