Tanks remain dry despite heavy rain
Staff Reporter
DINDIGUL: Despite implementation of linking of tanks and channels in several parts of the district and torrential showers that rocked the district last week, major tanks at Thadikombu remained dry, due to massive encroachments on supply channels and accumulation of silt.
The main channel that carried water to Nachiarkulam from Kanda Samudhram tank was highly silted and encroached.
This tank irrigated around 500 acres of land. With no water in this tank, supply to big tank at Undarpatti tank and Komalikulam was also very poor.
But excess water discharged from Samudrakulam inundated sapota trees and paddy fields in several acres as the narrow channel could not carry the entire quantity. Excess water flooded several farms also.
Meanwhile, people of Maravapatti broke the eastern bank of the channel to protect a small culvert on the main road, prime connectivity to several villages.
Such unplanned step left hundreds of farmers in the lurch.
People in the town alleged that supply channels at Maravapatti village were renovated under ‘Iyarkai Meetpom' (retrieval of nature) scheme, a programme of the district administration, without removing any encroachments.
Similarly, main tanks in Nilakottai tank too were not filled and some remained dry.
