COIMBATORE: “I'm happy now. I'm studying more and harder. And, I am also participating in competitions,” is how fifth grader S. Pavithra describes her present condition. The student of Corporation Elementary School, Siddhapudur, says she is what she is because of an initiative her school launched recently. The school principal, P. Chinnaponnu, has made Fridays' assembly a special and enjoyable occasion for students. She has provided a stage for students to showcase their talents and accomplishments, both curricular and extra-curricular. After the regular morning assembly, students can get onto the stage to narrate what they had memorised, pose riddles, teach what they had learnt, or virtually do anything they want to as a method of learning or teaching. R. Sivaranjani, another fifth grader, has grabbed this opportunity with both hands. Starting Wednesdays, my friends and I discuss what to present on Fridays. And this means exchange of ideas. Her classmates, schoolmates and she reach out to people in their neighbourhood to learn a trick or two to present on Fridays. The girl says the exercise has helped her get over shyness and develop confidence. Ms. Chinnaponnu says students like Sivaranjani have also developed leadership qualities in that they are able to lead students in the school. Some of the ideas the students get are from the textbooks. “The Sarva Siksha Abiyan (universal education) books encourage students to be creative and their taking up puppetry and skit is part of that exercise,” the principal explains.
