Twelve swept away in a stream near Vinukonda

Staff Reporter

Guntur: At least 12 persons including six children who were travelling in a TATA Sumo were washed away along with the vehicle in a stream near Pittambanda village of Vinukonda mandal on Tuesday. Three persons — Anil, Koteswara Rao and Pothuraju, were rescued by the villagers.

Forewarned

The victims were going from Karampudi to Addanki in Prakasam district after participating in ‘Palnadu Utsavalu'. The stream Ummadivagu is in spate due to heavy rain and the Sumo driver Anil was warned by passersby against crossing it, but he tried to pass through the gushing water. Three persons including Anil jumped out in time and they could do nothing to rescue the other passengers as the vehicle was by then lost in the flood. Vinukonda Rural Circle Inspector B. Nageswara Rao told The Hindu that the vehicle driver did not heed the advice to not venture into the stream which was flowing in a span of 100 metres. Search was on for those swept away. They were the family members of Koteswara Rao and Pothuraju.
