BANGALORE: Home and Transport Minister R. Ashok on Tuesday said the family members of war heroes will be given free bus pass by the Government for 10 years.

He was speaking to presspersons after honouring family members of war heroes on the occasion of Armed Forces Flag Day organised by the Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement at Raj Bhavan here.

Mr. Ashok said the free bus pass covers family members, including students. Hitherto, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) had been offering this facility to 15 families. The same will be extended to other road transport corporations across the State, the Minister said. The Government may also consider extending the validity period of 10 years for these bus passes, he added.

The Minister noted that a scheme offering housing sites to retired armed forces personnel is in vogue in the State. To benefit from this scheme, those joining the armed forces should have given Karnataka address, he noted.

In his address, Governor H.R. Bhardwaj urged the Government to be more responsive to the problems, including housing and education of children, being faced by retired armed forces personnel.

After their retirement, the personnel are in dire need of resettlement, healthcare facilities and education to their children, he pointed out. Retired Air Chief Marshal F.H. Major, retired Lieutenant General D. Raghunath, retired Vice Admiral Dilip Deshpande, Sainik Welfare Director and retired Colonel C.M. Uttaiah were present.

Governor's advice

Mr. Bhardwaj urged the retired armed forces personnel not to hesitate to approach him if they had any grievance.

The doors of the Raj Bhavan will be open for them round the clock, he told them at the Flag Day function here. Lauding the sacrifices made by the armed forces personnel, Mr. Bhardwaj said the personnel will be happy if they are shown that society is with them.
