Students asked to build confidence among differently abled

ARIYALUR: Students should exhibit a sense of empathy towards differently abled persons. This will go a long way in creating a sense of confidence among the less privileged, said T. K. Ponnusamy, Collector.
Speaking at a function to mark the observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday, Mr. Ponnusamy said the district administration had taken special steps for providing assistive devices to all the needy. A sum of Rs. 78.15 lakh had been spent for the distribution of the devices. The expenditure included Rs.5 lakh sanctioned out of the MLA Local Area Development Fund. All the 8,615 differently abled persons have been issued national identity card to be eligible for concessions and privileges all over the country, he said.
This apart, identity cards had been issued to 3,482 persons who had registered themselves with the welfare boards for the differently abled persons.Later, the Collector gave away hearing aid to 91 persons and Rs.25,000 each to three normal persons who had married differently abled persons. S.S. Sivasankar and K. Rajendran, both MLAs; R. Pichai, District Revenue Officer; Karunanidhi, vice-chairman, Ariyalur municipality and Selvaraj, District Disabled Welfare Officer spoke.
