MADURAI: People of K. Nattapatti in Chellampatti block in the district were in a celebratory mood on Thursday. Almost all families in the locality were decked up, with the grand old farmers donning their best dhotis and even children wearing their best school uniforms. They had all gathered for an occasion that was neither a temple festival nor a family function. It was to welcome one of their own who had done all of them proud — the Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department, V.K. Subburaj. The Secretary had come to inaugurate a new building constructed at a cost of Rs. 27 lakh for a primary health centre at K. Nattapatti, his native place. The villagers welcomed him with traditional ‘arthis' and fireworks as he entered the building. Once he came on to the dais, many villagers feted him with garlands and shawls. Cutting across party lines, many had gathered to honour him. Sholavandan Assembly Constituency MLA P. Moorthy pointed that in these times when many people forget and disown their roots, the Secretary had done good to his native place. A poignant moment came when a villager went to the microphone and reeled off effusive praises for Mr. Subburaj. He had the entire audience on its feet when he concluded by saying proudly that he was a classmate of Health Secretary at school.
