Bangalore: Law Minister S. Suresh Kumar promised, on the occasion Human Rights Day on Friday, that some of the long-pending demands of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission would be addressed immediately. Speaking at a function organised by the commission here, he said that the cadre and recruitment rules for the commission were being finalised and that the request for additional funding was before the Finance Department and would be cleared soon. Mr. Kumar suggested that the commission should widen its sphere of work and address rights issues in rural areas as well. Speaking earlier, Commission Chairperson S.R. Nayak had said that the demands of the commission had long been neglected and that the commission cannot be “reduced to rest in a hapless situation”. Government's ire Recalling that he had invited the wrath of the Government for chastising its machinery on its inability to handle the post-flood situation in north Karnataka last year, he said that he was only “carrying out a legitimate activity” that contributed to the fulfilment of the essential obligation of the state. Governor H.R. Bhardwaj said that it was necessary to respect and build institutions set up under the Constitution, since they alone can protect a democracy. It is the responsibility of the Government to ensure that all such institutions function without hurdles. He regretted that it had become “fashionable” to attack some of these esteemed institutions, including the judiciary.
