Bangalore: A “pharma city” with manufacturing units for medicines and medical products will soon be established in Karnataka as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said.

The SEZ will house export-oriented pharma products and will also include Ayurveda in order to popularise this traditional health system worldwide, he said at the inauguration of the Fourth World Ayurveda Congress here on Friday.

To meet the global demand for Ayurvedic products, a centre for medicinal plants will be established in the State, added the Chief Minister who pledged the support of his Government to “strengthen the study and practice of Ayurveda.”

Minister for Medical Education S.A. Ramdas advocated the use of Ayurveda in combating present-day chronic diseases like asthma and hypertension. The five-day Ayurveda Congress aims to “facilitate acceptance and recognition for Ayurveda as a complete health system adoptable in all countries.” The event is organised by Vijnana Bharati with the support of the Department of AYUSH and the State Government.
