Parliament stalemate enters day 21

K. Balchand

NEW DELHI: Proceedings in Parliament remained stalled for the 21st successive day on Friday over the issue of a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum scam. Some pandemonium prevailed in the Rajya Sabha before it was adjourned for the day. When the Chair sought to take up private members' business after the second adjournment, Opposition members rushed to the well of the House in protest.

A BJP member sought to snatch papers from the Chair, which provok d the Treasury Benches. Other BJP members, however, restrained him. The Chair later adjourned the House for the day. In the Lok Sabha, the members opposed the Chair from taking up private members' business, and the Presiding Officer eventually adjourned House for the day.

Monday is scheduled to be the last day of the current r session. Parliament functioned normally on day one of the session. From the second day, the Opposition has been holding up the proceedings, pressing their demand for a JPC probe.

On Friday, after the second adjournment of the Lok Sabha a simple enquiry from Union Minister Krishna Tirath turned into a political banter between the Treasury Benches and the Opposition.
