Formidables grabs lead

KOLKATA: Team Formidables of Delhi led the field in the Ruia Gold Cup with 87 victory points (VPs) at the end of the fourth round in the 52nd Winter National bridge championship, which got underway here at the Netaji indoor stadium on Saturday.

Formidables, represented by Kiran Nadar, Satya Narayan, R. Tiwari, B Prabhakar Rao, Subhas Gupta and R Venkatraman, are followed by D.P. Banerjee's Four, which tallied 83 VPs.

Defending champion Railways, with 70 VPs, and last year's runner-up Dhampur Sugar, with 58 VPs, could not impress much in the initial rounds. The teams will have enough time to recover with eight more sessions of play remaining.

Ruia Silver Cup, which has been introduced this year, saw the team from Allahabad Dipak Mitra's Four leading jointly with Patni's Four with 85 VPs each at the end of the first four rounds. — Principal Correspondent
