Mysore: Karnataka progressed to the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy Super Division after its Group B match against Baroda expectedly ended in a draw, earning it three points by virtue of its first innings lead, at the Gangotri Glades Ground here on Saturday.

The home side declared 23 overs into the final day, setting Baroda a target of 480 for victory. With victory not in either side's reach, both the teams merely went through the motions, with the match eventually called off after Baroda scored 151 for three in its second innings.

Overnight batsmen Amit Verma (80) and Stuart Binny (70) fell without adding much. Skipper Vinay Kumar then went after the Baroda attack, his entertaining half-century (50 n.o., 60b, 4x3, 6x2) containing slogged sixes over the long on boundary off Gagandeep Singh and Ketan Panchal.

Karnataka declared immediately after he got there, C.M. Gautam and Abhimanyu Mithun having been dismissed at the other end.

With a minimum of 65 overs left for the home side to bowl out Baroda, the early wickets of Connor Williams and Ketan Panchal may have provided hope but it was all too brief. Jaikishen Kolsawala and Rakesh Solanki dropped anchor to snuff out any chance of a result in the match.

After the formality of a final group match against UP, Karnataka, being last year's runner-up, will face a side from the Plate Division in the quarterfinals. Baroda next faces Himachal Pradesh and is also in with a chance of making the next stage, provided other results go in its favour.
