Tirupur Corporation plans new project for drinking water

R. Vimal Kumar

The city (52 wards) is spread over 28.25 sq km with a population of 3,44,543

The plan foresees the needs in transport, sanitation and health in 2016

Tirupur: With Tirupur city set to expand by the merger of eight village panchayats and two third grade municipalities in 2011, the Corporation administration will have more problems to tackle.

One of the main problems that the city residents and those in the eight village panchayats and the two municipalities currently face is the critical gap in the drinking water supply.

Given the pathetic basic amenities in many of the village panchayats which will be merged, the administration will have an uphill task to ensure a cleaner city.

“To augment drinking water supply, the Corporation will put in place a new project with its Detailed Project Report (DPR) to be prepared with the help of New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited (NTADCL),” the Corporation sources told The Hindu. NTADCL sources said the DPR preparation would commence as soon as the Corporation gave its nod.

Though the government order on the merger was issued, the Corporation sources clarified that the realignment of wards and assessment of infrastructure needs would begin only after the necessary ordinance was pronounced. Presently, the city (52 wards) is spread over 28.25 sq km with a population of 3,44,543 (based on 2001census) and has an annual revenue of Rs 58.99 crore (2009-10 fiscal).

Once the 15 Velampalayam and Nallur municipalities along with Chettipalayam, Neruparichal, Mannarai, Thottipalayam, Aaandipalayam, Muthanampalayam, Veerapandi and Murugamapalaym village panchayats are merged into the city, the area will go up to 159.35 sq km with a population of 5,48,773.

Since the city has infrastructure bottlenecks owing to population explosion in the last few decades, the Corporation is now taking steps to obtain necessary sanctions to fund the city development plan with an outlay of over Rs. 6,000 crore. The plan foresees the needs in transport, sanitation and health, among other sectors, in 2016.
