Water scheme turns sour

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: For a decade, the people of Kavundampalayam and Vadavalli waited eagerly for the Bhavani Drinking Water Scheme.

Now, the sour taste the water leaves in their mouth forces them to feel that it need not have been implemented at all.

The scheme was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in early June this year.

“The drinking water we get now tastes like bore well water. Even if the supply is erratic, it will be better to have Siruvani water again,” says E.Selvanayagam, president of Masaniamman Layout Residents' Welfare Association.

Uma Mohan, a resident of VSK Nagar, laments that there is no difference in taste between the bore well water supplied by the town panchayat and the Bhavani water. Chairman of Kavundampalayam Municipality K.M. Sundaram says the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board officials have assured that the quality of water will improve in a few days.

Quoting officials, a source says that alum has been used more than the normal quantity to treat the water.

The officials had said that muddy water from River Bhavani had to be treated this way in order to prevent health problems.

With the rain having stopped, water is expected to become clear over the next few days. This will enable the use of normal quantity of alum for treatment and provide tastier water.
