50 p.c. seats for women in Udupi ZP

For the first time EVMs are being used in the ZP polls

Nearly 6.73 lakh voters to exercise their franchise


Udupi: Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha said on Friday that the district administration was making all preparations for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections to be held on December 31 in Udupi district.

Ms. Hemalatha told presspersons that elections would be held for 25 zilla panchayat seats in the district. Elections would be held for the three taluk panchayats of Udupi (41 seats), Kundapur (35 seats) and Karkala (19 seats) on the same day.

There was 50 per cent reservation of seats for women. Thirteen seats for Udupi Zilla Panchayat, 21 for Udupi Taluk Panchayat, 18 for Kundapur Taluk Panchayat and 10 for Karkala Taluk Panchayat were reserved for women in the district.

Nearly 6,73,858 voters, including 3,62,853 women, were eligible to cast their votes in these elections. Candidates could start filing nominations from December 13. The last date for filing nominations is December 20. The nominations will be scrutinised on December 21. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is December 23. The counting of votes will be held on January 4.

The code of conduct had come into force. A zilla panchayat candidate can spend up to Rs. 1 lakh while a taluk panchayat candidate could spend up to Rs. 50,000 for election in his/her constituency.

For the first time, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections in the district.

Security arrangements

Superintendent of Police Pravin Pawar said the district police would make tight security arrangements.

It was planning to press into service seven deputy superintendents, 13 inspectors, 99 sub-inspectors/assistant sub-inspectors, 290 head constables/women head constables, 48 armed head constables and , 308 armed police constables.
