THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Film festivals are not just about screening of some of the best films culled out from all over the world, but also about taking stock, journeying back in time and honouring the living and the dead who have made stellar contributions to cinema everywhere.

In a significant attempt at documentation of Malayalam cinema's high the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy has put together ‘Milestones of Pride,' an exhibition of specially designed posters on Malayalam films and filmmakers who have won accolades from all over the globe.

The exhibition, said Academy vice-chairman V.K. Joseph, would soon travel to different parts of the State for new generation of film lovers to get a glimpse of Malayalam cinema's history.

Curated by Academy deputy director Sajitha Madathil with photographs collected by N. Gopalakrishnan and design by Sabu Pravda, the exhibition was declared open by actress Waheeda Rehman here on Saturday.

While Ms. Rehman hoped that there would be an attempt by the Academy to collect, restore and archive prints of all the important films in the language, Mr. Joseph said the Academy proposed to take up documentation in a big way. Academy executive committee member Siby Malayil and critic V.C. Harris, attending the function, hoped that the exhibition would help unravel the best moments of Malayalam cinema before a new generation of film viewers. The exhibition has a special segment on the bold experiments in the 1970s.

Among those present to witness the opening of the exhibition was Dada Saheb Phalke Award-winning film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Among the exhibits are several photographs from his films, each accompanied by brief, but educative, descriptions about the films, the filmmaker and the accolades won by him.
