TRS firm on stalling Assembly

Special Correspondent

Several serious cases, including those pertaining to murder, were withdrawn in the past: TRS

Kiran Kumar Reddy criticised for claiming to be a ‘Hyderabadi'

HYDERABAD: TRS will continue to stall proceedings of the Assembly even on Monday till the government gives a categorical assurance on lifting of cases filed against students and unconditionally releases those still languishing in jails.

The TRS staged a protest in front of the Speaker's chamber after the House was adjourned for the day by Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar. Squatting on the floor in front of the chambers, the TRS members held aloft placards demanding withdrawal of cases and raised slogans.

The MLAs told reporters that the party would insist on concrete steps from the government as the issue pertained to careers of students against whom hundreds of cases had been slapped. TRS floor leader E. Rajender and MLA T. Harish Rao recalled that several serious cases, including those pertaining to murder, were withdrawn in the past. They cited instances where cases registered against protestors who damaged properties and attacked people in the aftermath of murder of former MLA Vangaveeti Ranga and assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were dropped.

But, the government was adopting a different yardstick for Telangana students in spite of an assurance by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram. The Congress was trying to escape from its responsibility by adjourning the proceedings, they said.

They criticised Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy for claiming himself as a “Hyderabadi” and said he should prove his claims by lifting cases against students, a majority of whom were from Osmania University.
