‘Lift cases against students unconditionally'

Telangana Congress leaders urge APCC chief to take lead in the issue

HYDERABAD: Telangana Congress leaders may upstage the TRS in staging protests inside the Assembly if the Government does not unconditionally lift all the cases filed against students and youths who participated in the Telangana agitation.

Before precipitating matters, they urged the APCC president to take the lead and convince the Government to fulfil its promise of dropping the cases as he himself had expressed concern over the delay in doing so.

At a meeting of the Congress Action Committee for Telangana (CAFT) here on Saturday, party MPs decided to meet AICC president Sonia Gandhi and request her to immediately intervene in the matter.

The meeting hoped that the State Government would make a statement in the Assembly on Monday on the withdrawal of cases. Sources said the MLAs may show their resentment if the cases were partially dropped. The meeting also discussed the need to have a separate PCC for Telangana.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, R.Damodar Reddy, MLA, and Manda Jagannath, MP, said as many as 150 cases each were filed against some key student leaders. They wanted the Government to replicate the precedent of withdrawing cases against persons involved in violence in the wake of the murders of Vangaveeti Ranga in Vijayawada in 1988 and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Memorial meetings

The CAFT leaders decided to hold martyrs' memorial meetings in Nizamabad and Ranga Reddy district after the conclusion of the AICC plenary session in New Delhi on December 20.

The meeting, which was held at the residence of G. Vivekananda, MP, was attended by Panchayat Raj Minister K. Jana Reddy and BC Welfare Minister Basavaraj Saraiah besides MPs and a dozen MLAs and MLCs.
