Humpy in last eight; Harika awaits tie-breakers
NEW DELHI: K. Humpy cruised into the women World chess championshipquarterfinal after completing a 1.5-0.5 victory over USA's International Master Anna Zatonskih at Hatay, Turkey, on Saturday.
Second seed Humpy, who won the first game of the pre-quartefinals on Friday with black pieces, quickly drew the second in 14 moves.
In the pre-quarterfinals, Zatonskih offered a pawn early but never really got her act together. After simplification, Humpy took the initiative and showed aggressive intent with her rook and queen. A late error from Zatonskih hastened the end.
D. Harika, the other Indian in contention, drew both her matches against Ukraine's Mariya Muzychuk. After a 90-move marathon on Saturday, the players settled for a similar verdict in just 24 moves on Saturday.
The issue will now be settled in the tie-break games on Sunday.
