Time for converting huts into concrete houses could be reduced: Minister

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: The identity cards now being distributed under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme are the guarantee cards for getting concrete houses, said K.Ponmudy, Higher Education Minister.

If M. Karunanidhi were elected as Chief Minister for the next term there is a possibility that the time to be taken for converting all the 21 lakh huts in the State into concrete houses could even be reduced from five to three years.

There was also a possibility of higher allocation for each unit, Mr Ponmudy said at a function organized at Kandachipuram in Mugaiyur Assembly constituency to issue 1,556 I-D cards to the housing scheme beneficiaries on Monday. The Minister said that all the welfare schemes launched by the Karunanidhi government were not meant for any particular sections but meant for all castes, religions and political parties.

Mr Ponmudy decried the attempt made in certain quarters to under-report the number of concrete houses built so far in the district. He said that this year 37,793 concrete house would be built in Villupuram district and gave a detailed account on the number of houses already constructed, handed over to the beneficiaries, under various stages of construction and yet to be started. District Collector R.Palanisamy, Mugaiyur constituency MLA V.A.T.Kalivaradhan and others were present.
