Seeking shelter:Residents of Saminatham staging a protest at the Collectorate in Tuticorin on Monday demanding for construction of new houses.

Tuticorin: The residents of Saminatham village, attached to Ottapidaram Panchayat Union, approached the Collectorate here on Monday and sought the intervention of district administration to initiate remedial measures for the damaged houses in the wake of incessant rainfall in the district.

The agitating members demanded for construction of new houses. Due to rainfall, 47 houses had been damaged, they claimed. Most of them were on the brink of collapse. More than 300 people were staying at the locality.

Hence the authorities should carry out assessment of damages and take efforts to construct new ones, S. Murugan, village president, said.
