Six drown in canal near Chennagiri

DAVANGERE: Six persons, drowned when a raft by which they were travelling capsized in the Bhadra right bank canal near Hiremalali village, about 20 km from Chennagiri on Monday.

The victims have been identified as Fathima, Parveen Bobby, Shabeena, Nagina Bhanu, Rehamuthulla, and Touseef. The police recovered five bodies.

Rehamuthulla and Touseef, along with their families, had come to their relatives' house in Nalluru village in Chennagiri taluk. While going back, Rehamuthulla saw a fisherman going on a raft and asked him to take them on a joy ride. The fisherman is said to have explained the risk involved, but when they insisted, he reportedly agreed.

All the six drowned barely a few minutes after the start of the journey. The fisherman swam to safety.
