Junior doctors' strike enters eighth day

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: The indefinite strike by post-graduate students of Andhra Medical College and its teaching hospitals like King George Hospital, seeking immediate release of their stipend, entered eighth day on Monday. The house surgeons joined the strike on Saturday last in support the PG students.

The junior doctors took out a rally from KGH to Jagadamba junction where they formed into a human chain before returning to their protest camp in KGH premises.

A delegation of joint action committee of junior doctors went to Hyderabad to meet the Director of Medical Education and if possible the Principal Secretary to discuss their demand.

Meanwhile, the KGH administration has taken steps to ensure proper medical care to the patients in the absence of PG students and house surgeons.

The existing manpower has been redeployed to ensure the OPs functioned normally, wards were taken care of, the usual admissions were made and the elective and emergency surgeries were performed, said KGH Superintendent G. Santa Rao.

The District Medical and Health Officer deputed 10 medical officers while the Principal of Andhra Medical College has sent some service post-graduate students to KGH.

There was no compromise on the usual medical care at the hospital, said Dr. Santa Rao.
